New Mexico Residency Rules
Difficulty
How to get in-state at Universities in New Mexico:
Universities in New Mexico are less strict overall when it comes to earning residency, but they still have both domicile and moderate financial requirements. You must have the intention of being a permanent NM resident and take all the steps that any other new resident does when they move to a state (i.e. driver’s license, voter registration, etc.). Financially speaking, many universities do not require employment in-state (although it greatly helps your case!); however, they do require you to be independent meaning you support yourself over half of all your expenses, thus making you eligible to claim yourself on tax returns.
For New Mexico colleges, you are a good candidate for in-state if you:
- Have intentions for NM residency above and beyond school
- Can remain in NM with limited absences during your domicile period
- Are able to commit yourself to NM via domiciliary requirements
- Can financially support yourself for at least over half of all your expenses
- Have some sort of employment in the state (not necessary, but may be needed to support yourself, and also helps your case)
Every college is different, so make sure you fully know and understand rules and regulations at your specific school of interest.
