Texas Residency Rules
Difficulty
Texas has some universities with extreme differences between in-state and out-of-state tuition, e.g. $25,044/ year difference at University of Texas-Austin. Maybe that’s part of the reason why there aren’t very many out-of-state students in Texas. Becoming a Texas resident is possible but it’s rarely pursued by undergrads. Some people simply have no business even trying because they’re not good candidates, but so many good candidates never get started, don’t commit, don’t follow-through, or simply have no idea what they’re doing. You have to know exactly you’re doing, formulate a plan, and then execute flawlessly.
Since universities in Texas interpret the state law differently, each university in Texas has a slightly (or drastically) different residency policy.
Texas Reciprocity Agreements:
Texas is a barely-participating member state of the Academic Common Market which is a limited regional reciprocity agreement among select Southern states. Texas only participates through their graduate programs meaning if you’re coming from or going to Texas as an undergrad, you won’t benefit.
