UCCS In-State Rules

In-state residency regulations vary by university; so do the costs and benefits of earning in-state status.  Below, you will find an overview of the major in-state requirements for UCCS, an exact accounting of what’s at stake, as well as a consideration of in-state residency’s influence on financial aid including popular UCCS grants and scholarships.

UCCS Tuition Overview:

$20,250 out-of-state tuition

UCCS In-State Requirements:

Schools in the CU-system (CU-Boulder, UC-Denver, UCCS) are very similar in their overarching regulations and interpretation (see below) but have subtle differences involving more granular nuances.  Such nuances come into play when it comes to 1^st-year student requirements governing dorm requirements and full-time student status requirements.  These seemingly little things can pose major obstacles for some people and ultimately call for fundamentally different strategies to demonstrate in-state eligibility.  For a more detailed understanding of nuances and intimacies at play at UCCS, a standard report would cover that.

In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is somebody who:

• firmly wants to plant their flag in Colorado
• can sever all ties to other states
• can remain in Colorado throughout the year with limited absences (including very limited absences during academic breaks)
• is able to or willing to take a semester or year off school (not necessary but encouraged)
• does not live in the dorms
• is able to work in Colorado
• is able to get student loans as needed
• is self-reliant

UCCS Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:

An annual tuition difference of $12,540 is definitely not a miniscule amount. When looked at over the course of a four-year education the total difference in cost between in-state and out-of-state tuition is over $50,000.

 

UCCS Financial Aid:

A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at UCCS:

1) Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that requires your being a tax dependent of somebody OR requires you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.  There are some exceptions to this whereby certain awards you can accept during your domicile period but will automatically surrender upon earning in-state status.

2) Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the vastly reduced tuition you will owe.

UCCS Grants:

In addition to standard federal grants (Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant), Colorado residents are also eligible for the Colorado Student Grant, which is up to $1,250 depending on financial need.

 

UCCS Scholarships:

Provost Scholarship (nonresident)

Specifically for students paying out-of-state tuition. Maximum award is $20,000 over four years ($2,500 per semester). Requires minimum 3.0 high school GPA and minimum test scores of 23 SAT/1080 SAT. Presidential Scholars do not qualify for this scholarship.

Presidential Scholarship (nonresident)

Also for out-of-state students, these scholarships are highly competitive and granted to incoming freshmen that excel in one or more of four categories: Sciences, Leadership, Arts or Athletics. In addition, applicants are judged on essays. Presidential Scholars receive a reduced tuition (110% of resident rates), and the award is renewable for four years if certain requirements are met.

Chancellor’s Resident Scholarship (resident)

These $1,000 one-time scholarships are automatically awarded to freshmen with a Colorado Commission for Higher Education (CCHE) index score of 105 or higher (for information about calculating a CCHE score, click here). The awards are first-come, first-served until funds run out.

Kane Scholars (resident)

This amazing scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, fees and books for 4 years. Competition is tough, and is based on stringent criteria (3.5 HS GPA, resident of Colorado, essays and, if chosen as a finalist, an on-campus interview). Kane Scholars are expected to be campus leaders, top students, and graduate within four years.
