Boise State University In-State Requirements:

First and foremost, the burden of proof lies upon you (the petitioner) to prove to the university that you moved to and live in Idaho for purposes other than education.  What this also means is that residence in the dorms does not count toward proof of permanent ID address, seeing as dorms are transient in nature and of course directly related to college.  Similarly, if you are enrolled and taking any more than 8 semester credits during your domicile period, then you are deemed to be in Idaho primarily for school, and this in almost all cases disqualifies you from being granted in-state residency.  On top of the required domiciliary aspects, you must also be able to financially support yourself to a certain degree.

In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is a person who:

  • firmly wants to plant their flag in Idaho
  • is able to stay in Idaho during the domicile period with limited absences
  • can sever all ties to other states and establish in Idaho
  • does not live on-campus
  • is able and willing to attend school less than full-time during domicile period
  • can significantly (but not necessarily completely) financially support self and all expenses
  • is able to get student loans if need be

Boise State University Financial Aid:

A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at BSU:

  1. Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
  2. Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.

Boise State University Grants:

This scholarship waives the nonresident portion of tuition for students of specific majors.  Application requires 3.6 GPA and an ACT of 26 or SAT 1170 (critical reading and math) Renewable for 3 additional years if you maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Honors College

If you have earned entry into the Honors College, you are automatically considered for merit-based Honors scholarships.  The most prestigious is the Brown Honors Scholarship – full tuition, room and board for 4 years, plus a stipend to cover fees.  These scholarships are competitive.
