Mississippi Residency Rules
Difficulty
Universities in Mississippi are especially fickle about who can qualify as a resident. Somehow, in seeming opposition to federal statutes governing free inter-state movement, Mississippi has nigh-categorically shut out anyone under 21 from beginning the path toward Mississippi in-state residence for tuition purposes. Over 21? Great, then it’s do-able by the time you’re 22…oh what’s that, you will have graduated already…right.
Well, everyone moving to Mississippi who will still be 22 in college (or is married, or is in the military, or whose parents are both deceased…), you better get in-state because nobody else can! Even if you’re one of those special cases, there are of course other requirements and the process takes forethought, execution, and follow-through.
Mississippi Reciprocity Agreements:
Mississippi is a member state of the Academic Common Market which is a limited regional reciprocity agreement among select Southern States. Favorable college tuition rates in nearby states are sometimes possible through reciprocity although many restrictions apply.
