How to get in-state at Universities in Oklahoma:
For most people, it is possible to earn in-state status as a continuing student after a one-year domicile period. There are also some unique ways of qualifying discussed later. Please keep in mind that every university has its own interpretations of state laws so please see below links to in-state outlines for universities in Oklahoma.
Most people:
You can qualify as an independent person after a one-year domicile period where you demonstrate that your educational pursuits are secondary (not primary). Your non-primary educational pursuits is demonstrated substantially by being at maximum, a half-time student. If you’re anything more than a half-time student, consider yourself disqualified regardless of what else you do.
Bypass one-year domicile period:
Accept full-time job in Oklahoma prior to moving to OK. Establish domicile in OK. Apply to a university in OK as an in-state resident.
Your continued in-state status is contingent upon your continued full-time employment unless/until you can independently establish in-state status.
Oklahoma Out-of-state tuition waiver:
If a parent has a full-time business registered in OK and pays OK state income taxes, then a dependent student can get in-state status.
Oklahoma Reciprocity Agreements:
Oklahoma is a member state of the Academic Common Market which is a limited regional reciprocity agreement among select Southern States. Favorable college tuition rates in nearby states are sometimes possible through reciprocity although many restrictions apply.
