Oregon State University In-State Requirements:

Oregon State University is one of those colleges in the country that does not allow full-time enrollment at the school during the one-year domicile period.  Simply put, full-time attendance at the university leads to the assumption you are in the state primarily for school, and that is a disqualifying factor. Additionally, in-state employment is required, but the required amount of hours worked per week is variable depending on if you are attending school part-time or not at all during the domicile period. If going to school part-time, then you have to overcome the presumption of being in Oregon just for school by working near full-time; if not attending school during your domicile period then you can get away with less hours per week.

Also know that on-campus residence is not allowed. If you want to attend school full-time and not work at all during the one-year domicile period, then residency / in-state tuition is a no-go for you here at this school. Financials are of concern as well, because you must have the capability of supporting yourself and at least one have of your expensesf. For many, taking a Gap-Year from school over the domicile period is a wise consideration and the best way to showcase to the university you are in the state for more than just college.

In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is a person who:

• can sever all ties to other states and establish in Oregon
• is able to stay in Oregon during the domicile period with limited absences
• does not live on-campus
• is able and willing to attend school half-time maximum, or not at all, during the domicile period
• can be gainfully employed and meet the amount of weekly hours required
• can financially support self and pay at least half of all expenses

Oregon State University Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:

An annual tuition difference of $17,172 is mighty significant. That annual amount adds up to being a four-year total difference in cost of near $70,000 ($68,688 to be exact) between in-state and out-of-state tuition.

 

Oregon State University Financial Aid:

A few things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at OSU:

1. Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
2. Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.
3. If looking at earning residency, then it is important to know that OSU has specific criteria you must understand when it comes to your use of various FAFSA dollars (i.e. there is a big difference between using a Stafford Loan and a PLUS Loan to help pay for tuition).

Note About Reciprocity Agreements….

This university does NOT participate in WUE

According to OSU’s website, “Oregon State University no longer participates in the WUE program. Most WUE programs have limited slots with a very select list of majors that are eligible for the program. Oregon State offers two large out of state scholarship programs in the Provost and Tuition Grant which compare very favorably to WUE in terms of the monetary value. All eligible out of state students will be considered for the Provost and Tuition Grant programs.”

 

Oregon State University Grants:

Oregon Opportunity Grant

This grant is somewhat commonly awarded to in-state students showing financial need.  For the 2015-2016 school year, there is a fixed award amount of $2,100.

Oregon State University Scholarships:

All students are automatically considered for all university-level scholarships by completing the scholarship section of the OSU admissions application.

Academic Achievement Scholarship (Residents only)

To be considered for this scholarship, incoming freshman must have a 3.85 GPA and at least a 1800 SAT or 26 ACT. Awards range from $2,000 to $3,500 annually – renewable upon meeting academic requirements. Scholarship question responses are also evaluated.

Presidential Scholarship (Residents only)

This is the highest level scholarship dedicated to the most distinguished Oregon students. A minimum 3.85 GPA and test scores of 1900 SAT or 29 ACT are required. This award offers up to $10,000 per year, renewable upon meeting academic requirements. Scholarship question responses are also evaluated.

Tuition Grant Scholarship (Nonresidents only)

This scholarship is offered to out-of-state students and can range from $2,000 to $3,000 per year. A 3.0 GPA is required and recipients are mostly evaluated by their unique experiences and essay responses. Scholarship is renewable for up to four years upon meeting academic requirements.

Provost Scholarship (Nonresidents only)

The Provost Scholarship is offered to nonresidents with exceptional academic records. Incoming freshman are required to have a minimum 3.75 GPA and at least an 1800 SAT or 26 ACT. In addition, recipients are chosen by their scholarship question responses. Scholarship awards range from $4,000 to $7,000 annually and are renewable for up to four years upon meeting academic requirements.
