University of Arkansas In-State Requirements:
A commitment to the state of Arkansas outside of solely or primarily attending school is a must. In order to prove this to the university there are various requirements that must be met prior to the beginning of your six-month domicile period, and you must provide evidence of your ability to financially support yourself to a degree, as well as be gainfully employed in and by the state of Arkansas.
Overall, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is somebody who:
- firmly wants to be and remain in Arkansas
- is able to work in Arkansas
- is able to get student loans as needed
- is an adult who is significantly but not necessarily fully self-reliant
- can sever all ties to other states
- can remain in Arkansas throughout the domicile period with limited absences (including limited absences during academic breaks)

University of Arkansas Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:
An annual tuition difference of $12,090 is nothing to sneeze at, and if you were to take a Gap Semester or Gap Year and live in Arkansas prior to attending, then that is a grand total savings of $48,360 across all four years. Now take that even further—if you have to make monthly loan payments after graduating, let’s say to pay off your loans with a 10-year (120-month) plan, with in-state tuition savings that means your loan payment would be $403 less each month!
University of Arkansas Financial Aid:
A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at UA-Fayetteville:
1) Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency. This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
2) Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.
