University of Connecticut In-State Requirements:
The University of Connecticut is an interesting school in terms of the policies for the granting of residency and in-state tuition. Although you might be able to get away with full-time attendance during your domicile, it definitely is best to limit your credit load to no more than 11 credits maximum per semester during the domicile (less is better). Extremely important is your actual physical presence in CT during the one-year domicile period; plan on having very, very minimal absence time from the state during this timeframe and especially during academic breaks such as Winter, Spring, and Summer. Financially speaking, a job earning income in-state may not technically be required although is certainly beneficial. Your sources of financial support are examined. Are you used to getting money from parents? That cannot happen anymore. Money received from non-parents is a lesser evil, but that does not mean you don’t have to worry about supporting yourself whatsoever.
In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is a person who:
- is able to stay in Connecticut during the domicile period with very limited absences
- can sever all ties to other states and establish ties in Connecticut
- is willing to attend school no more than 11 credits per semester
- can be gainfully employed in the state of Connecticut, even if less than part-time
- is willing and able to be primarily self-reliant financially while no longer receiving financial support from parents whatsoever

University of Connecticut Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:
An annual tuition difference of $20,180 is very significant. This means that the four-year total difference in cost of attendance between a resident and non-resident is $80,720! This places UConn among those schools in the country that have the largest discrepancy between in-state and out-of-state tuition rates.
University of Connecticut Financial Aid:
A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at UConn:
- Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency. This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
- Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.
