University of Illinois In-State Rules

Rules and regulations for in-state residency vary by university, and so do the costs and benefits of earning residency status. University of Illinois In-State Requirements:

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign falls a bit more on the strict side when it comes to earning residency at the university.  A commonality across many schools holds true at UIUC—-all petitioners must have and showcase intentions for permanent residency in the state of Illinois for purposes other than school.  There are various domiciliary requirements, as well as financial requirements.  For example, not only must you be employed/working in IL, but you must make a required amount of income, and be able to showcase your ability to support yourself and all your expenses to a particular degree.  Don’t want to work at all and just want to go to school?  Well then in-state status is a no-go for you at this university.  Along with domicile and financial components you should be aware that this school allows absence from Illinois to exceed no more than three weeks total during the one-year domicile period.

In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is a person who:

• has the intention of permanent residency in the state
• is able to stay in Illinois during the domicile period with limited absences
• can sever all ties to other states and establish in Illinois
• can be gainfully employed and meet the school’s income requirement
• can financially support self and all expenses to a certain degree

University of Illinois Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:

The difference in total tuition between a resident (in-state tuition) and non-resident (out-of-state tuition) at UIUC adds up to almost $60,000 total ($58,504 to be exact) over the course of a four-year education.

 

University of Illinois Financial Aid:

A few things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at UIUC:

1. Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
2. Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.
3. If looking at earning residency, then it is important to know that UIUC has regulations specific to your usage of any FAFSA dollars as to whether or not it counts toward your income (usually it does not).

Undergraduate Tuition Guarantee Program

Incoming freshmen will have their tuition rate locked for four years (five for certain majors).  This is a great way to plan ahead for college costs.

Illinois Promise

For incoming freshman from the state’s neediest families, Illinois Promise will fund the entire cost of attendance through grants, scholarships and work-study.  To qualify, among other criteria, the Expected Family Contribution (determined through FAFSA) must be $0, family income must be at or below the federal poverty level and total family assets must be less than $50,000. The funding is for four years if criteria continue to be met.

University of Illinois Grants:

Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant

This is a state-funded grant for Illinois residents, and is need-based. Grants may be limited based on FAFSA application date, number of applicants and funding levels appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly.

 

 

University of Illinois Scholarships:

Prospective students can submit a scholarship application and will be matched to available university scholarships.  They also have a website for other scholarships that are available, with varying criteria and award amounts.  Some require a separate application.

President’s Award Program (PAP) / Honor’s PAP

This program benefits incoming freshmen that are Illinois residents with test scores of 25/ACT or 1150/SAT and from underrepresented groups at UI, including certain racial/ethnic groups, residents of certain Illinois counties, or dependent students with a family’s expected financial contribution of zero (per FAFSA). The current award is $5,000/year, renewable for three additional years. The highest achieving PAP applicants will receive an Honor’s PAP, which is $10,000/year. About 200 students a year receive the Honor’s PAP.

School of Engineering Department Scholarships (nonresident)

Nonresident students that are admitted to the School of Engineering will be considered for department scholarships at four levels: Premier Scholarship ($15,000/year); Enhanced Scholarship ($10,000/year); Excellence Scholarship ($7,500/year) and Achievement Scholarship (amounts vary).
