University of Nevada Las Vegas In-State Requirements:
At UNLV applying for residency is different depending on if you never took a class at the school before or if you have already attended at least one class or more previously. For both types of applicants it still takes at least one year, and you need to have the intention of remaining a Nevada resident in order to even begin to consider petitioning for residency. No matter your student status the obtaining of specific (Nevada-issued) domiciliary documents is required. Not only that but do know that living within a dorm during your domicile period is almost always a guarantee that you will not be eligible for in-state status; dorms are directly related to the university and you have to prove without a doubt that you are in the state for purposes other than education. Furthermore, you must be able to financially support yourself to a certain degree and provide evidence of this financial independence.
In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is a person who:
- lives off-campus
- can significantly financially support self and all expenses
- is able to stay in Nevada with limited absences
- firmly wants to plant their flag in Nevada
- can sever all ties to other states and establish in Nevada

University of Nevada Las Vegas Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:
The difference in tuition between in-state and out-of-state is almost $7,000 per semester. A non-resident at this university pays $13,910 more each year versus a resident. That amount adds up over the course of four years of college with a grand total difference of $55,640 between in-state and out-of-state tuition.
University of Nevada Las Vegas Financial Aid:
A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency:
- Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency. This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
- Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.
