University of New Mexico In-State Requirements:

There is a little more leeway at this university, but that by no means equals an easy-breezy petition process for residency. More or less there are some things that are not required (i.e. employment in-state is not necessarily required nor is registering of vehicle, but these items are dependent on other details). However, just because some things are not required does not mean you get away with not doing them. For example, you must be able to financially support yourself to a certain degree so that you are independent, and this may mean you do have to have a job for employment income in order to make that happen. Limited absence time from the state during your one-year domicile period is also required at this school.

In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is a person who:

  • is able to remain in New Mexico throughout the year with limited absences
  • can sever ties to other states and establish them in NM
  • is able to get student loans as needed
  • can obtain employment and work in-state if need be
  • is an adult who can dominantly support self

University of New Mexico Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:

An annual tuition difference of $14,218 is quite a bit and certainly nothing to ignore. That means a total four-year difference of $56,872 between in-state and out-of state tuition.

University of New Mexico Financial Aid:

A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at UNM:

  1. Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
  2. Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.
