Utah State University In-State Requirements:
This university offers a little more flexibility compared to others when it comes to earning resident status. Of course it is still a one-year process with required actions and documentation that must be provided in order for the school to confirm you are in fact a Utah resident deserving of in-state tuition. What state are you a voter in? Do you have a Utah driver’s license? These are a couple domicile items that are needed for residency. Another big factor is your actual physical presence in Utah. Do you want to leave Utah all summer and go stay with your parents in another state? If yes then you would not be granted in-state status at this college, because limited absence time from the state during the one-year domicile period is an absolute requirement, and you must provide evidence of your physical presence.
In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is a person who:
- is able to remain in Utah throughout the year with limited absences
- can sever ties to other states and establish them in Utah
- can obtain employment and work in-state if need be
- is an independent adult who can dominantly support self financially

Utah State University Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:
An annual tuition difference of $12,107 is quite a chunk of change. Meaning that over the course of a four-year college education at this school, a non-resident student would pay almost $50,000 more ($48,428 to be exact) in total tuition compared to a resident.
Utah State University Financial Aid:
A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at USU:
- Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency. This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
- Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.
